About

Ben Jenkin

Ben started his first job in coffee as a barista in 2011 to help pay for his studies in the environmental sciences – focussing on sustainable maize production in smallholder communities in Zambia. Since then, Ben has worked at every stage of the coffee supply chain. From starting his own roastery, to restarting a dormant specialty importer, to working on remote washing stations in East Africa – Ben has developed a wealth of experience throughout the chain.

As a 2 on the Enneagram, the Considerate Helper, Ben was initially drawn into coffee because of the strong service element at the core of the industry. Ben no longer serves flat whites or delivers roasted coffee but instead works to provide roasteries in the UK, SA, Australia, UAE and USA with the best service possible when marketing specialty coffee from the Mara region of Tanzania.

Throughout his journey in coffee Ben has always attempted to giveback to the industry, by volunteering his time to judge national barista competitions in both the UK and South Africa. In 2019 Ben surveyed employers like Starbucks and Seattle Coffee Company for the SCASA “Barista Living Wage Calculator”. Ben has also been published twice inThe Coffee Magazine, writing about his experiences in East Africa aswell as the difficulties of defining truly “sustainable” and “ethical”coffee.
